Swim Test for Competitive Team
Although each swimmer does NOT have to be proficient at all four strokes to be on the team, he or she does need to be a competent, independent swimmer.
For the safety of our swimmers, new swimmers who are 10 and under will be required to pass a swim test. To pass the test, the following requirements must be met:
1. A 25 yard freestyle swim will be observed. Requirements are:
- Must swim using long strokes with the arms.
- No stopping or holding onto the side of the pool or lane lines.
- No dog paddling.
- Swim must be completed within 60 seconds.
2. A 25 yard backstroke swim will be observed. Requirements are:
- The swim must be accomplished without stopping.
- There is no time limit on the backstroke swim.
- Swimmer must remain on their back using appropriate stroke.
We suggest taking your child to an open swim and observing if your child can complete the above requirements before coming to the swim test. Please contact us if you have any questions.
The 2026 swim test will be held before registration, so that we can better place swimmers in the right program for their skill level. If your swimmer has participated with a USA swimming club, send a screenshot or copy of any meet result showing a completed freestyle and backstroke event to [email protected].

How Long Does It Take to Learn to Swim?
Swimming is a skill that requires time to learn. On average, it takes 30 hours of lessons for a child to learn to swim 25 yards of freestyle confidently and consistently. If your child takes a 30 minute lesson twice a week, this equates to over six months of lessons. The more often the child is in the water receiving instruction, the quicker he or she will master the art of swimming.
